Southeastern Palm Society meetings are held at some of the most interesting private and public gardens in the Southeast, and include the opportunity to meet and exchange experiences with fellow enthusiasts. Meetings are held in various locations, and we try to hold at least one per year within driving distance of most of our members. Our winter meeting typically features an expert speaker and annual plant auction. And SPS meetings are renowned for their plant sales, when nursery owners and amateur enthusiasts alike sell and swap hardy palms and unusual subtropical plants. Non-members are always welcome at SPS meetings.

Members who would like to host and organize a SPS meeting in future are welcome to submit proposals. A form and instructions are mailed each year with the spring issue of Southeastern Palms.

SPS Summer Meeting

On Saturday, August 2, 2008, the Southeastern Palm Society will hold its first-ever meeting in Virginia at the Norfolk Botanical Garden in Norfolk. This warm coastal location puts a SPS meeting more easily within reach of our enthusiastic members and guests in the mid-Atlantic states.

The NBG contains over 30 theme gardens displayed on 155 acres. The plantings make good use of Zone 7 and 8 material with attractive displays of palms and cycad specimens, shrubs, roses and other flowering plants, water features, a tropical house and garden, native plants, and much more.

The meeting begins with our customary plant sale and everyone is invited to bring their treasures to sell and trade. The NBG will also offer for sale 1-gallon Butia capitata, Butia eriospatha, Nannorrhops ritchiana (green and silver forms), Sabal minor var. 'Louisiana', Sabal ‘x texensis’, Trachycarpus fortunei x wagnerianus, Trachycarpus takil and Trachycarpus wagnerianus. How’s that for the makings of a great sale?

Agenda

10:00 am     Plant sale in the picnic area inside the garden [note: changed from the parking lot]

11.00 am     General meeting at the picnic shelter

12.00 pm     Lunch at the Garden Café (onsite, with a selection of sandwiches, wraps, salads, soups)

Afternoon     Tour the botanical garden at leisure.

Austin Brown Memorial Garden

Friends of SPS member Austin Brown, who passed away on October 6, 2007, are installing a garden in his memory in his hometown of North Augusta, South Carolina. The plan is spearheaded by Joann McKie, Glen Daniel, and Larry Watts, and the garden is located on land donated by the city at Georgia Avenue and Clifton Avenue across from the new city hall. SPS member Mary Alice Woodrum is the garden’s designer.

The master plan calls for a eleven species of hardy palms and cycads to serve as the evergreen structure of the garden, with color and accents provided by angel trumpets, heliconias, several banana species, clumping bamboo, elephant ears, and agaves. The city is donating sidewalks and an irrigation system, and past SPS president Joe LeVert donated a large Washingtonia palm that was rescued from the construction at Aquinas High School across the river in Augusta, Georgia.

Contributions to the garden fund are welcome. Make out checks to The Austin Brown Memorial Garden Fund and mail them to first Citizens Bank, 1289 Knox Avenue, North Augusta, SC 29841. For more information, contact Robbie Bell of North Augusta at apalmforyou@bellsouth.net or 803-221-7227.
